Legislation Reaffirms Commitment to Local Journalism and Small Businesses
In a strong show of support for hometown newspapers and the small businesses that rely on them, Representatives Claudia Tenney (R-NY) and Suzan DelBene (D-WA) have reintroduced the Community News & Small Business Support Act in the 119th Congress. This bipartisan legislation is designed to help locally owned and independent newspapers continue to serve their readers—whether through print, digital, or other emerging platforms—by providing much-needed financial support for both publishers and advertisers.
As local newspapers continue to face economic challenges, this legislation provides critical support to ensure that quality local journalism remains strong. Unlike national media, which often prioritizes sensationalism and partisan conflicts, hometown newspapers focus on what truly matters—local businesses, schools, community events, and the stories that bring neighbors together. This bill ensures that Americans have access to reliable, community-centered news instead of being forced to rely on narratives that may not reflect the values or priorities of their towns.
Dean Ridings, CEO of America’s Newspapers, praised lawmakers for their continued support, stating:
"Unlike large national media outlets, hometown newspapers are often multigenerational, family-owned businesses deeply connected to their communities. This is an issue that affects every state, but the challenge is especially urgent in areas where local newspapers are often the only reliable source of news. Many of these communities are underserved by mainstream media, which doesn’t always reflect their priorities or way of life. The Community News & Small Business Support Act is recognition that strong local newspapers are essential—not just for keeping citizens informed, but for supporting small businesses, preserving local traditions, and strengthening the fabric of Main Street America."
With the continued closure of newspapers across the country, the Community News & Small Business Support Act represents a meaningful investment in the future of local news and the businesses that depend on it.
